Two clubs are coming that try to stop chunks and thins around the green by making the club heavier.
PRGR's R35 and R50 wedges go on sale Nov 12, 2026, both at JPY 33,000 (tax incl.).
Lining up the spec sheets, the only number that differs is loft: 35° and 50°. You'll be able to decide which one to bag.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
If you carry just one, make it the R35. What these two really are is putters in the shape of a wedge. 34 inches long, 71° lie angle, 559g total weight. Every one of those is a putter number, not a regular wedge number.
Heavy, short and upright. That leaves no room to use your wrists, so all you can do is swing with your shoulders. Chunks and thin shots both come from the wrists releasing so the head drops early, or from scooping. The design closes off that source.
The 35° R35 is designed to roll three times as far as it carries. It needs the smallest swing. If I were choosing, I'd take this one first.

PRGR R35 vs R50 wedge: release date, price and bottom line
Some players need the R50 first.
Those who often lose strokes where there's a bunker or rough between them and the green and no way to run the ball. The 35° can't carry it.
Others need neither: players who already get close by rolling an 8-iron or 9-iron. There's no reason to spend ¥33,000 and one of your 14 clubs on it.
How I picked: three yardsticks
- Loft. The two differ on this one line. The 35° R35 rolls three times as far as it carries, and the 50° R50 rolls as far as it carries (PRGR's explanation).
- Whether the numbers are a putter's. Length 34 inches, lie 71°, total weight 559 g. Heavy, short and upright, it leaves no room for the wrists.
- The situation. If there's a path to roll the ball, the R35; if you want to carry a bunker or rough, the R50.
By these yardsticks, if I could carry only one, I'd put the R35 first.

The R35 is a rebuild of a model that has run since 2005, and the R50 is a first. Lengths are 34 inches and 32 inches. Choose the one closer to the length of the putter you own.

I compare the R50, which has the same loft, against PRGR's ordinary 50° wedge.

110 g: that much heavier than an ordinary 50° from the same maker (my calculation). Breaking it down: 46 g in the grip, 12 g in the shaft, and the other 52 g in the head and around it.
The grip is 96 g, about twice that of an ordinary wedge grip. PRGR also writes that the outer diameter is about 5 mm thicker than before. A heavy, thick grip works as a brake on a wrist-flicking motion. The lie is about 7° more upright, so the whole sole sits flat at address. The length is 1.25 inches shorter. The weight, the angle and the length are all numbers chosen to push your approach toward a putting stroke.
Can you change the grip on the R35 and R50?
If you change it, choose a grip that's just as heavy. Both clubs use a 96 g grip to load the butt end, making them 46 g heavier there than a typical 50° wedge (50 g grip).
Switch to a light grip and the total weight and balance change, taking it away from the goal of using weight to quiet the wrists (my reading).
The sole's ground-contact area has been halved
The bounce figure isn't published. What PRGR does describe is the shape of the sole. A raised rib called a "sliding rail" lifts the base and halves the area that touches the ground compared with the previous product. The leading edge is also rounded so it digs in less.
The R35 and R50 assume a setup where your hands don't go forward. The face progression is 2 mm, and the leading edge lines up almost with the shaft line. I wrote about why bounce disappears in chunked chips and bounce.
From 20 yards, the R35 lands it 5 yards out. The R50, 10 yards out
Let's apply the maker's ratios to a shot with 20 yards to the pin.

The R35 gets there if you land it 5 yards short. The nearer the landing spot, the shorter the swing, and the fewer the mishits. But it only works if the 5 yards short is on the green or the fringe. If rough or bunker runs 10 yards, the R35 can't carry it. That's where the R50 comes in.

What I like
- No room for the wrists. Chunks and thin shots come from the wrists unwinding. The weight, length and angle close off the source of that.
- The sole glides. Halving the area that touches the ground helps the club pass through even when it comes in from the front (the maker's explanation).
- No doubt in the numbers. A loft of 35° is about the number of an 8-iron. The R35 is a dedicated tool for "rolling it with an 8-iron."
What to watch for
- Don't change the grip in competition. The R&A equipment rules count this kind of club as a "chipper," part of the iron family. The grip must be round in cross-section and just one; swapping in a flat-sided putter grip takes it out of the rules. The product page says it "conforms to the 2010 groove rules."
- It uses one of your 14 clubs. If you add the R35, you take one club out. If you add both, two. That may be the biggest cost.
- Price and measurements. It costs ¥6,600 more than an ordinary wedge (my calculation). There is no third-party measurement of how the sole glides yet.
Who it suits: if you're torn, choose by what you want
- The R35: players who chunk or thin chips from the fringe or edge, players who find it awkward to set up when rolling an 8-iron, and players confident in their putting touch.
- The R50: players whose hands freeze when they hold a wedge where there's no path to roll, and players who scoop approaches with a 50° or 52°. It is a tool for carrying a bunker or playing downhill slopes.
- If you have last year's R35+: The R35+, which came out in limited numbers in December 2025, had a grip of 33 mm outer diameter and 143 g. This one is 96 g, 47 g lighter (my calculation). If the R35+ already gets you close, there is little reason to switch.
- When your current clubs are enough: when chip-and-runs with an 8-iron already get you close. If your chunks come from too little bounce, rethinking your wedge's bounce is the quicker fix.
Price and where to buy: before you buy, roll ten balls with your 8-iron
Before the ¥33,000, there's something you can do for ¥0. Choke down on an 8-iron, take the same grip as a putter, swing with just your shoulders, and roll ten balls from just off the practice green. If seven or more finish within a one-putt distance, your 8-iron is enough. If the roll suits you but your contact is inconsistent, the R35; if you're in trouble where there's no path to roll, the R50.

Reading the official pre-release information: ¥33,000, and how to check before you buy
The R35 and R50 go on sale on November 12, 2026 (I re-read PRGR's product page on November 1, 2026).<br class="pb">This article is built only from official figures and has no impressions from hitting them. I'll add feel and distance after release.
Of the 10 wedges compared in the wedge ranking, ¥33,000 is the third most expensive.<br class="pb">Six of those 10 sit between ¥29,700 and ¥34,100, so it lands in the upper part of the price range for one wedge.
Even with the weight and loft lineup in numbers, hitting one before you decide is the safe route.<br class="pb">If you don't buy, the substitute is the wedge you already own. Do the "roll 10 balls with an 8-iron" test above first.

When do the PRGR R35 wedge and R50 wedge go on sale, and what do they cost?
Both go on sale Nov 12, 2026, with an MSRP of ¥33,000 (incl. tax). They come in 34-inch and 32-inch lengths (PRGR official, checked Oct 14, 2026).
What is the difference between the R35 and the R50?
On the spec sheet, the only difference is loft. PRGR explains that the R35, at 35°, is designed to get the ball close with 3 parts roll to 1 part carry, and the R50, at 50°, with 1 part roll to 1 part carry. The 71° lie angle, 559g total weight (34 inches) and price are the same.
How are they different from a regular wedge?
Compared with PRGR's own 0 TOUR wedge 50° (449g, 35.25 inches, 63.5–64° lie angle), the R50 is 110g heavier, 1.25 inches shorter and about 7° more upright in lie angle. It has a putter's length and lie angle, and it's built to be swung like a putter.
Can it be used in competition?
The product page says they "conform to the new groove rule of 2010." Under the R&A Equipment Rules, clubs like these (chippers) are iron clubs, and they are allowed only one grip, which must be circular in cross-section. Swap in a flat putter grip and the club no longer conforms.
