How many wedges, which lofts and how much bounce, plus new-model comparisons.
Best wedge? No. 1 is the Vokey SM11 (JPY 29,700 for 1 club)
My No. 1 is the Titleist Vokey SM11. In an overseas comparison test it was the only one of 15 models whose spin did not drop when wet (100.0% retention). On a budget, look at the Mizuno T-1/T-3 (JPY 25,300) or the Cleveland RTZ 2 (JPY 27,500). My reasons are in the wedge ranking.
Choose wedges in this order: how many, which lofts, bounce, then brand
If you start from the brand, lofts overlap or leave gaps. Just changing the order saves you a wasted club.
| Step | What to decide | Rule of thumb | Related article |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | How many to carry | If your PW is 44 degrees, three wedges (for example 48, 52 and 56) | How many wedges? |
| 2 | Which lofts | A 4-degree gap each. If you add just one, make it 56 | Combination table |
| 3 | Bounce | If you hit behind the ball a lot, 12 degrees of bounce or more on a 56 | Chunking and bounce |
| 4 | Brand | Wet-day spin, price, number of sole grinds | Ranking and the 11 wedges of 2026 |
My 7-iron goes 160 yards (my own measurement). Say my PW is 44 degrees and about 130 yards. Each 4 degrees takes off roughly 10 yards, so a 56 is about 100 yards (a rough guide based on my measurement). Wherever that 10-yards-per-4-degrees staircase has a hole, that is the next club to add.
