How to choose a hybrid, plus new-model comparisons. We explain why to choose by loft in degrees rather than by "4".

Best utility club? No. 1 is the Mizuno JPX ONE (JPY 49,500)

My No. 1 is the Mizuno JPX ONE utility. It came first of the three I compared on shot spread, ball speed and price. PING G440 is the one that always has the loft you need, with six clubs from 17 to 34 degrees. The longest carry came from the Qi4D Rescue. My reasons are in the utility ranking.

10 utility clubs you can buy in 2026: price and loft range

Even a "4" can mean anything from 20 to 23 degrees, depending on the brand. So the table is organized by loft range, not by club number.

The cheapest is the SRIXON ZXi RKT with a steel shaft (JPY 44,000). The most expensive is JPY 57,200, so the gap is JPY 13,200 (my calculation). If you want to fill in the lower numbers too, three clubs go up to 34 degrees: the G440, QUANTUM MAX FAST and Qi4D MAX LITE.

Which loft to buy? Start from the distance of your current 5-iron

A utility around 23 degrees has the same loft as the 5-iron in many iron sets. My 7-iron goes 160 yards (my own measurement). With a 10-yard gap per club, a 23-degree club covers about 180 yards (a rough guide based on my measurement). First check the loft of your longest iron. A club 3 to 4 degrees stronger is your first utility. I put each maker's club numbers and lofts side by side in the utility buying guide.
